How To Become A Nurse In Wyoming

The demand for healthcare workers in Wyoming is expected to increase over the decade as the state’s population ages. According to a report by the state’s Department of Workforce Services, Wyoming will add 5,700 healthcare jobs by 2020.

Even more openings will be created as healthcare workers retire, move or leave their jobs, according to the report, which was released earlier this year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are now 4,300 registered nurses in Wyoming, the least populous state in the United States.

Wyoming has a population of only 568,158 though it hosts millions of visitors who come to see the state’s national parks and natural monuments. Each year Yellowstone National Park, the world’s first national park, has three million visitors who come to see “Old Faithful,” the most notable geyser, in the world erupt roughly every 90 minutes, shooting up gallons of boiling water.

Wyoming Nursing Jobs Range from Hospitals to Clinics

The scenic mountain state offers nursing jobs at hospitals and many medical facilities, such as the 90th Medical Group clinic on the F. E. Warren Air Force Base.

Nursing licenses are issued by the Wyoming State Board of Nursing, located in the capital city of Cheyenne. The board takes applications for licensure testing, provides information on nursing practice, and handles license renewal. To be eligible for licensure, a prospective nurse must pass the standard NCLEX (National Council Licensure) examination for registered nurses (RNs) or licensed professional nurses (LPNs). The board’s role is also to provide collaboration and regulatory framework

for nurses to practice to the fullest extent of their scope. The Wyoming Center for Nursing and Health Care Partnerships is also an active advocate for nurses and nursing issues in Wyoming. The center also funds pilot projects through various grants for the recruitment, training and retention of nurses.

Nursing Salaries Ahead of Other States in Region

The average salary of RNs in Wyoming ranges from $57,00 to $74,000. Surrounding states such as Montana, South Dakota, and Idaho employ more nurses than Wyoming, but they have larger populations. Nurses in Wyoming earn more than nurses in neighboring South Dakota, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Nurses have several educational options in the state. A bachelor of science in nursing is a four-year program offered at universities and prepares students to practice across all healthcare settings. A BSN is preferred and is often required for military nursing, case management and public health nursing.

LPNs care for patients under the direction of physicians and RNs, provide basic care, take and monitor vital signs, assist with bathing patients and apply dressings. Most LPN programs are about a year long and are offered by community colleges or technical schools.
