How To Become A Nurse In New Jersey

A recent study projects New Jersey will have a shortage of 23,358 nurses by 2030 and several organizations are working to ensure enough nurses can be trained to meet future health care needs in the Garden State.

The New Jersey Board of Nursing licenses registered nurses and practical nurses, and regulates the nursing profession in the state. The board also certifies advanced practice nurses and home health aides along with accrediting nursing schools.

To avert a health workforce crisis, the state created the New Jersey Nursing Initiative (NJNI) to address a staggering 10.5 percent nursing faculty vacancy rate and the projected shortage of more than 23,000 nurses in New Jersey in less than two decades.

New Jersey Has an Unprecedented Program for Nursing Shortage

When the nursing initiative was launched in 2009 it was an unprecedented experiment in addressing the nursing faculty shortage So far the NJNI’s Faculty Preparation Program has supported 61 New Jersey Nursing Scholars pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees that qualify them for teaching positions.

The Nursing Academic Resource Center of New Jersey, an online tool for graduate-level nursing students, has a centralized application system to streamline the nursing school application process for prospective students and monitor the availability of slots in nursing programs.

In addition, the New Jersey Action Coalition helps implement recommendations from the Institute of Medicine’s landmark nursing report as part of a nationwide effort to transform nursing and the delivery of health care in America.

New Jersey also has a Nursing Faculty Loan Redemption Program Act, which was signed into law in 2010. It provides student loan redemption in exchange for full-time employment in the state as a nurse faculty member.

Nursing Teaching Scholarships Generous

Current data show that the nursing population is aging, with only 8 percent of New Jersey nurses younger than 30. The average age of the state’s nurses is 51, and the average age of nurse faculty is 55. NJNI has awarded $21.5 million to a group of institutions of higher education to support the New Jersey Nursing Scholars with full tuition and fees, a $50,000 annual stipend and a laptop computer.

The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce Foundation is dedicated to maintaining and improving the state’s high-quality workforce, and also focuses on stemming the shortage of nurses in New Jersey. The New Jersey State Nurses Association promotes the profession and provides information about employment and taking the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for licensing.
